Getting to the CoRe

Symposium on Communicative Receptive Approaches to Language Learning and Mutual Understanding in Multilingual Academic Contexts

On 20 November 2026, Utrecht University will host the Getting to the CoRe symposium, on communicative receptive approaches to language learning and mutual understanding in multilingual academic contexts. The symposium will present and discuss the findings of three research projects on receptive multilingualism and their implications for language use, language processing, language learning and language policy in academic contexts.

The symposium is intended for professionals and researchers in language education, language policy and linguistics, as well as for students in Research Master’s programs in Linguistics and Master’s programs in Intercultural Communication, Language Acquisition and Multilingualism, and Education in Languages and Communication. PhD candidates are also warmly invited.

Presentations and discussions will address:

1. multilingual interaction in university participatory bodies (by Madison Steele);
2. receptive multilingual language processing (by Natalia Rivera);
3. receptive multilingual teaching and learning (by Kimberly Naber);
4. lunch + poster presentations
5. interviews with members of multilingual participatory bodies (hosted by Jan ten Thije);
6. interviews with teachers and participants in a receptive Dutch course (hosted by Rick de Graaff);
7. a panel discussion on implications and recommendations for university language policy (hosted by Rick de Graaff)
